A remarkable burial find in central Asia has spawned considerable interest beyond archaeologists, due largely to some non-archaeologists comparing the mummy's boots to thick-laced athletic shoes. Jack Phillips has the summary and links to the original

Again, this good summary links to a parent article that has pictures of the actual carved piece of stone and a 3-D digital model of the piece. The carving is said to be surprisingly well-done for its age and important as an early piece of narrative art. Its exact purpose, however, is currently inscrutable. (WM)
