This month in China the tourist industry took a bit of a hit when a park ranger misidentified an Alligator Gar--i.e., a big ugly fish--as a lake monster, and officials posted warnings that visitors should not go in the water. The usual media circus ensued until wildlife officials got involved and identified the fish. It probably wasn't just a case of ignorance on the part of the park ranger. His assumption of "monster" was no doubt due to there being so many
Mysterious Lake Monsters of China. Not just the typical serpentine or dino-style critters, but beasts that seem bullet-proof, giant man-chasing/eating toads, and groups fish reported to be 50-feet-long and 4-tons a piece. So which came first, the Godzilla franchise or the beasts that seemed to inspire it? (CM)
