Scientists Discover a Whole New Kingdom of Life - Popular Mechanics

A student from Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia recently discovered a seldom seen life form in soil samples taken for a research project. This microscopic organism--a "hemimastigote"--has been known to science for some time, but only now do we have the ability to sequence its DNA. Turns out it deserves its own kingdom designation. (All Hail, Hemimastigote!) And if you like that, you're going to love this next report: Divers Discover Mysterious Sea Creature about 30 miles off the northern coast of New Zealand. Called a Pyrosome, this 26-foot-long, wormlike creature is comprised entirely of "hundreds or thousands of very small sea creatures that come together in a tube-like mass that free-float in the water." It also has a bioluminescent glow, earning it the nickname Unicorn of the Sea. Is there a cryptid tourist company out there who can take us to New Zealand? (More on this on Friday.) (CM)
