In this world of self help, we are quick to latch onto the next big concept--the vitamin or exercise or practice--that will end our daily angst and bring us one step closer to our personal Nirvana. The mindfulness and meditation craze is one such practice, but it occasionally shows its dark side with certain devotees. Whether it's due to brain rewiring (it's the age of neuro-plasticity, after all), heightened senses, or the stark contrast between the meditative plane and this pumped up, angry, violent and materialistic world, meditation seems to drive some individuals to the brink of destruction, making day to day life unbearable, with recovery being a long road that requires professional facilitation. Clearly this is a case where too much of a good thing stops being a good thing. Warning: May cause existential angst. (CM)
