Red Glowing Mountains?

This happened 5 years ago and it still freaks me out to this day.

I was 21 years old. It was a nice summer night. Cool but not cold. My friend had just bought a new car. He wanted to take a cruise so me and 3 of our friends hopped in.

We started driving and ended up getting lost somewhere on the border between Massachusetts and Connecticut. It was a really cool area to drive through. On one side it was all rolling fields and mountains. On the other was woods with huge houses hidden between the trees. Super scenic.

As we are driving down the main road I notice a huge glowing res light coming from a basin at the top of a mountain range. It was a huge basin, the whole thing glowing, and the lights were bright. I pointed it out and we stopped. We got out of the car to look at it. None of us could explain it. One of my friends took a picture of it with her fancy DSLR camera and a very expensive lens. (She had her camera with her because she had been shooting my band that day)

We looked at the pictures on the screen and none of them came out. They were just blurs of the sky and mountains, but no glowing res light. She took several more and the same thing happened. The rest of us tried to take pictures with our phones and the same thing happened with them. Of course, this could be explained by the distance from it. But I can’t stress this enough, the light was super bright, illuminating everything around it. And the pictures showed the mountains. One of us thought it was paranormal, a ghostly portal or something. Another suggested aliens. Personally I think it was some sort of military base.

A lot of other super weird stuff happened that night. We got in the car and kept on driving, all feeling kind of weird. We ended up going through the woods, following a dusty, windy road up and down hills. We came across a jagged sign nailed to a tree at a dead end that said “Have Respect”.

Then, we started driving up a hill, and saw a very old man climbing the hill carrying an honest to god candle lit lantern. He was dressed in a white button up shirt with suspenders and slacks. This was around midnight. We slowed down to pass him and I couldn’t take my eyes off him. He didn’t look up, was not startled or phased at all by a car driving past him on this desolate stretch of road. Once we passed and got further up the road I turned around to get a last look and he was gone. Everyone else looked and noticed he was gone, too. We all agreed that he was definitely a ghost. (Or that he climbed into a hidden drive way somewhere)

Some other crazy stuff happened that night. There were bunnies that were following the car. We almost hit a black bear that was crossing the road. But nothing super paranormal.

But back to my main question, what the hell was that red light????? It was crazy, and super creepy. Any rational explanation?
