This happened a few years ago, so I must have been in either eighth or ninth grade. It had been a year or a little less since my parents had split up and my dad hadn't broken the habit of sleeping in the den downstairs. To explain the structure of our house I guess I should say we technically have two living rooms. One living room is on the left, and that's where my brother liked to sleep because there was a T.V. There's a room in between the two living rooms where the front door is, and then there's the living room on the right, where my dad slept.
When this weird "thing" happened, I was sure both of them were asleep. I could hear my dad snoring and if he did come upstairs I would have heard his footsteps come up the stairs and down the hall. These footsteps were different than his, if that makes sense. He walks a certain way that wasn't the same as these footsteps and these were wearing boots. He obviously wouldn't be wearing boots if he was just walking around his own house.
Anyways, I was up in my room. It's at the end of a hall, and the stairs face the opposite direction. So if you were walking up them you'd go up the stairs, turn left, take a step, and turn left again and start walking to get to my room, you'd walk down the hall and take another left. In the beginning I just heard footsteps coming down the hallway, I didn't hear anyone coming up the stairs. Everyone was asleep so obviously I was high alert and terrified someone had broken into our house. We have a balcony we've never used in the back that has stairs leading to the ground. I figured I would have heard someone open that door since it's so old and I figured it was dead bolted, but I was questioning that as I listened to the footsteps coming to my room.
I listened, they were either wearing shoes or boots, and it sounded like they were walking for forever. It sounded like they were walking down a hall five times the length of mine. The footsteps continued and never got louder or quieter, it was the strangest thing to listen to. It was like someone was walking in place, but these were full on heel to toe footsteps I was listening to. Eventually it sounded like they were getting closer, but it was a constant state of them getting closer without them ever actually reaching the end of the hall. I didn't know what was happening. My door creaked open at one point, but I blamed the draft that could have been caused by our AC.
I get up and look down the hall, there's no one there. I go downstairs, there's no one there either. I check to make sure my dad's really asleep, and he's knocked out, snoring and all. I check on my brother, he's asleep as well. He's much younger than me too, so there's no way he could have made such heavy sounding footsteps at his weight.
I go back upstairs and continue watching T.V. A few minutes later, the footsteps start all over again. They sound closer, but it's like they're in a constant state of getting closer without actually getting closer or ever reaching my room. I get the courage to look out of my door, and of course there's nothing. I look at the door that leads to the balcony, it's locked and the cobwebs on the outside were all connected still, so I knew no one had been messing with it. The balcony floor is pretty dusty since, like I said, no one uses it, and there were no footsteps on the layer of dust on the floor.
I go downstairs for one last time and I grab a knife because I thought my house was seriously being invaded. I look around, nothing had changed. Everyone is asleep and nothing was opened or moved. Doors were locked, windows were shut and locked. I go to walk upstairs and I hear the footsteps again, all leading down the hall, progressively getting louder, but never reaching the end of the hall. I slowly walk up the stairs, and there's nothing there.
I spent the entire night in fear because I swore up and down something or someone was in my house, but there was nothing. I haven't had a night like that since, nothing that severe or exactly like that. I've heard footsteps or other things here or there, but nothing like that night.
