Standing Leaves

I grew up with some crazy intense paranormal stuff, but when I went to college it all died down. I managed to go years without experiencing so much as a floorboard creaking until four years ago. Back then my ex and I moved into a cheap place with her sister to save money for a year.

After the first week of living there, my ex’s sister kept asking if we were moving stuff around in her room. She swore up and down that her decorations were being rotated on the shelves. However, I assumed she was misremembering how she placed them since she was under a lot of stress because she was in her first year as a master’s student and finals were approaching. Later she began to complain that her room door was locking and somehow her door to the outside was unlocking. Once again, I was dismissive, but we had the landlord change the locks for good measure.

We lived there for about eight months when my ex’s sister decided to move out. After she was gone I began to notice that the door in her room was still unlocking. We never used that door, but every once and a while we would double check that door and just find the deadbolt unlocked. The other two locks were untouched. Then there was a moment when I was watching TV and the cat who was sitting right in front of me suddenly got up and looked down the hall as if something was there. His sudden move caused me to look over and try to figure out what he was looking at. His gaze tracked an object moving toward the open door right next to us. I assumed it was a bug, but as his eye line met the door handle, the toy hanging on it moved as if somebody brushed against it. The way it moved, it looked like an article of clothing caught the string somewhere in the middle. I immediately tried to figure out how it moved, but all of the windows were closed and the only way I could reproduce the movement was by pushing the middle of the string about six inches from plumb and letting go.

Now for the really creepy thing. It was fall and I was taking the trash out one night when I heard the leaves rustling in a large area of the driveway in front of me. The air was dead still so I assumed it was cockroaches. I pulled out my flashlight on my phone because I didn’t want to step on them and track a bunch of bug guts inside. When I shined the light in front of me, instead of seeing a bunch of cockroaches, I saw all of the leaves on the ground standing on their tips. They stood like that for less than a second and then all fell at once. I was in total disbelief and I immediately dismissed it as a misperception. I continued to walk to the trashcans and kicked around in the leaves to see if there were any bugs, but I didn’t see any. I was tossing the bag when all of a sudden I could hear the leaves rustling behind me again. When I turned around all of the leaves were standing on their tips and this time they just stayed there. I don’t know why, but it hit me with such a massive sense of dread that I literally sprinted around the block to get to the side door rather than go up the driveway. Nothing ever happened after that, but it was one of the weirdest things I’ve experienced.
