Real Estate for the dead.

A sinless life and the acknowledgement of death (letting go) is key to reincarnating as a human. Buddhism has taught me that the spirit realm is for those who fail one or both of the fundamental tasks; some had been sinful, others just can't accept that they've passed away. Either can sometimes get jealous of the living, and cause suffering and misfortune, unless, if we can provide a quiet and peaceful place for them to settle down for eternity. Although they can reincarnate with the special pardon from a religious person (ie. a monk), for some, the afterlife had become their reality.

I was just a child just then, and this is my story. On a regular weekday morning, my mother was jolted awake by something. I had always slept in the same room with my parents, and that morning felt like something out of the ordinary. We had this medium-sized safe in the bedroom for storing important documents, as well as money of course. She explains that an old, wrinkly man had been speaking to her with a trembling voice in her dreams. The man in the dream stated clearly that he was uncomfortable, trying to live between the back of the safe and the brick wall, and threatened to cause death and disease to the home if we didn't build him a better place to stay. So, we put up a bird house on a tree (they accept anything) the next day, filled it with what we assumed he would like and placed various religious items nearby to temporarily imprison the woman.

The next thing we knew was that our mixed pet bulldog-shihtzu, had died the night before. I remember vets saying that his heart stopped. He was always frightened by everything such as thunder, but this is no coincidence. After a really sad burial in our front-yard garden, my mother conversed again with the woman the next night. It was a different request this time. The man wanted to 'eat' chicken biryani. So we fulfilled his wishes and placed a plate of the food underneath the tree that he was currently settled in. Oddly enough, the plate and the food was untouched the next day, from the local birds that would have snatched the drumstick, even to the ants that would have at least took some of the rice. My mother explained that it is a sign that the man had 'eaten' the food, but he could never be pleased. I woke up, feeling extremely ill and disabled, eyes red and watering. I was diagnosed with an eye infection. As if that came out of nowhere. We thought, "This guy has to go."

We invited a few of the prestigious monks from our local monastery, and did a little 'pardoning' for the old man. After that, we never saw the man again. Even after a decade later, I would still see visions of people - shadow people, wandering in my home, either in my dreams or in reality. Maybe one day, they'll mess with us again.
